News: Sungai Chua homeowners seek compensation for their damaged house

Aug 6, 2020

Three homeowners in Taman Taming Emas in Sungai Chua, Kajang want the contractor of a sewerage upgrading project within their area to compensate them for the cracks that appeared in their homes, following construction works at the road outside their houses.

While a date has yet to be set for the parties to discuss compensation or repair works, Kajang Municipal Council has revealed plans to step in as a mediator, reported The Star.

One of the homeowners, 45-year old Lew Hui Tse, noted that the problem has dragged on for too long.

In fact, it has even forced her to rent a place to stay even as she has a property of her own.

“The repair quotation for the house is RM250,000 but the contractor has only agreed to RM180,000, a sum which we have yet to receive,” she said as quoted by The Star.

The cracks, which worsened over time, began to appear on the walls of her home in Jalan Taming Emas 3 way back in July 2017.

In May 2018, an assessment by the contractor showed that the house was no longer safe for occupation. As such, the occupants were asked to temporarily relocate.

The affected homeowners said the contractor had verbally promised to conduct rectification works on their homes within six months. However, no works had been done so far.

Another houseowner, 50-year old Khor Sim Ee, shared that while she wanted to sell her house in 2015, there was no buyer.

“With the cracks now, how am I going to sell it?” she said, adding that the last letter she got from the contractor was dated July 2019.

The central sewerage treatment plant upgrading works had affected some 156 houses, with most of them suffering minor cracks. The contractor had repaired a total of 149 houses.

Meanwhile, Balakong assemblyman Wong Siew Ki called on the contractor to rectify the problem.

“I have received numerous complaints from residents here about cracks appearing in their houses because of the sewerage upgrading project,” she said as quoted by The Star. “I urge the contractor to rectify the problem.”
